If you notice any other fish with this condition, I suggest you take them out immediately. This is definitely a bacteria infection and will move from one fish to another is not stopped. Also I suggest some antibiotics for your water. Please keep us posted.

what kind of antibiotics should I be looking into? The other fish seem to be doing great, nothing noticable yet... but I will have my boyfriend keep an eye on them after tuesday for a week since I will be in california visiting my great aunt and her daughter.

You can go to any LFS and asked them for antibacterial liquid for your aquarium. They will give you a plastic bottle with a blue liquid in it. This is the antibiotic that will keep your other fish from also getting sick. It might be a good idea to use it as a preventative medicine. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Often times a bent back is a sign of dropsy, which like everyone has said is a bacterial infection. I personally would recommend maracyn or any good antibiotic, but typically by the time you see the bend it's too late. Even if you don't save the poor little bugger, it's a good idea to test your water chemistry and take any necessary actions to try to prevent any future losses.
