i thought the same thing and dumped a a bunch of salt into the tank and that one dat that was breathing hard still died, but everyone else lived.

my best guess would have to be internal parasites and by the time it gets to the point of breathing heavily... that would be the last sign of life and you would probably have a night or 2 tops before it dies. had too many of these guys die on me because of this problem and i still havent figured it out. whats weird is that i still have one that has symptoms of this problem that has lived for about 2 months now and its only 1.5" big.

Your 8 dead dats were thin bars too, right? One of my two thin bars is currently having the same symptons. Let me guess, they are the ones that are always stable and looking beautifully? My unstable one is breathing normal and have had it over a year. The new stable ones I got always die on me for no reason. Maybe there is a reason they are stable all the time, stressing from dying?

the one i picked out was probably one of the best looking ones out of the lot. maybe its just a burden to be beautiful

Mine is having this problem too...breathing hard and all that :( Just bought it yesterday...where did you buy it?? just curious...maybe same place...

ive only had 2 thin bars die on me because of this sickness. the rest were indos. what i noticed is that the ones that kept stable and most colorful were the ones that had the sickness.

This is surprising. I'm new to the Dat world, but I thought they were hardy fish. I've had my CK and Aro for about a year now and just picked up two 4" dats. I guess I'll keep my eye on them to make sure they are adjusting ok.

IMHO comparing aros and dats... i think aros are a lot hardier than dats. dats seem pretty sensitive especially when they are young.
