My male red jewel has the following:
  • loss of color
  • clamped fins
  • lethargy
  • periodic "jerky" movement
I treated the fish about 2 weeks ago with Maracyn II. There was slight improvement, but it still is exhibiting the above listed symptoms. The female red jewel does not have any problems. They have been in a 20 gal. tank together for about 8 months and have spawned numerous times.

The ph is 8.0 and the temp. is 79.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ammonia, nitrites and nitrates? Water changes?

Daily water changes, nitrite 0, nitrate < 20. Water parameters are good. The male was previously treated for eye cloud. There is no aggression in the tank. They are the only fish in the tank.

A med Hex-a-mit will do the job. I am thinking the case is parasitic. Do a water change before you start treatment. One capsule for each 10 gallons, treat every other day for five days. So you must do 3 treatments. If the jewels are the only things in the tank, treat the main tank.
