What's your experience with convict breeding aggression ?

Friend of mine has a 75 gallon tank. Well when he first got it, he got a red devil and a green terror both around 3" and let them grow. When they hit 4" or so, he added a single male convict. Tank was great. No aggression. No territory disputes. The tank was never meant to house the green and red through to maturity. He had a 125 ready for the red to move into when space became an issue. Well when the green was 5-6" and the red was 6-7", he decided to buy another convict. The guy at the store swore up and down the convict was male. Wrong. It was female and it paired up with the existing male in just a few days. Well they teamed up on the red and the green. In less than 2 days, they had killed the green. The red was moved to the 125 immediately after the green passed. He still breeds cons to this day, but as food for his red devil. LOL

I've had con pairs quarantine off a good section of a 100 and keep jags and black belts away.

Another +1.

They will take on fish 2-3 times their own size without a second thought when they are breeding. I have seen single convicts kept in tanks with no issues at all. But apparently they become monsters when they are breeding. Still are a beautiful fish though.

ive experienced breeding cons being very aggressive and afraid of no fish regardless of the opposing fishes size. the only fish ive ever seen take on a breeding pair of cons n win was this african. he was a straight up mercenary. killed all theyre fry n would have killed them both as well if i hadnt removed him.

A breeding pair of cons in a 20 gal tank is more than enough for weekly treats for my jags.

I have an empty 20 high I am thinking of setting up in a few months so I can breed cons to feed to my 3-4" severums (who will be 5-6" when I can afford materials to get the 20 running and suitable to house fish). My sevs are a bit shy and I am hoping healthy feeders will bring them out a bit more.

I believe it's important for predators to stretch their muscles every now and then. Pellets are a good staple, but it's easy to get lazy when your food floats in front of your face.
