Instead of a firemouth colony he could do a convict colony and watch as the older fry take care of the younger fry. I’ve always wanted to do that in an 8’ x 4’ x 2’

Coptodon adults will kill other fish and feed it to their fry

you could do black ghost or african knife but it sounds like you want a chunky fish. Chocolate cichlid?

My high on lyonsi might wear off one day but they are such a cool fish, highly under rated.

For me, Red Tail Catfish... I have 3... I start them out usually in a 40 gallon breeder. Slowly move them up. Bad Cat is my biggest one. He is 26 inches now in length. Killed a 18 inch common pleco last night. They had been together for over a year.
