What's your favorite "Wet Pet" (Central/South American cichlids)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hypselecara Temporalis. They aren't rare, yet not everyone has one. Fairly interactive. Mine spends a lot of time at the front of the tank checking out what is going on in the room. They'll hand feed, follow people that walk in front of the tank, etc.

Midas and Jack Dempsey's seem to be the smartest to me-They have alot of personality however my JD is very moody she will pout for days if I try to take her picture. My Midas was shy for a week now he begs for food like a puppy and almost lets me pet him. Jags, Umbees and Nandopsis are cool if you have the room. But their personalities are a little different in that they tend to give off that I want to eat your face vibe.

Anyone that's seen an adult Midas would probably agree it would be unrealistic to keep it in a 75. The sheer bulk of them makes them massive.

I'd be tempted to go down the Texas route, but it might outgrow the 75.

Put another vote in for Oscars, still my favorite cichlid ;) Tons of personality ime. and good looks to boot!

If you gave me a 75, and said choose your fish, I would go with an Oscar or a Midas. If you asked me to choose between my Oscar and Midas, I would keep my Oscar.

You know the last one to make me sick inside to lose was my Chocolate. He was like an oscar but not so bullish. My vieja I thought was making me feel that way, but once they start to cause all the problems in your tank, you want to reach in with a stun gun and blast him, so we divorced.

It makes you wonder, do they like you with all the coming to greet you at the glass and shaking around, or does he want to kill me. I felt I had to sleep with one eye open. I still miss him though.

Now, I kept my friends 12 inch female jag for a couple days, and I got attached to her real fast, its the one fish now, I think I would dedicate a big tank to just for a pair.
