12, 1" Jack Dempsey's. They were on sale , 3 for a dollar. This was in 1975. They were placed in a 20gal high.

My mom got me my first fish and it was a calico goldfish. The first fish that I bought for myself was a blue gourami and a bleeding heart gourami. That was 1985.

One of my favorites still to this day. The fish had attitude and wasnt skittish at all. Lost him to heater malfunction.....still ticks me off when i think about it

Clownfish lol when i was only 9, it was a terrible idea to start with saltwater esp. since i had the tank for 4 years and kept witnessing deaths, i feel so bad for those fish now.
