What's your GPH water turn over rate on your tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just remember that just because your pump or filter says "x" gallons per hour that means at zero head with absolutely no resistance.

55g: 350gph=6.36xhr
150: 1050gph=7xhr
300gpond: 550=1.8xhr

well for fun once i hooked a penguin 150 up to a 1 gallon takn for a turn over rate of 150 times an hour haha....

i'm a fan of more water flow, and i would argue that more flow can help algae. the back pane of glass on my 29g used to be absolutely covered in a hairy algae that actually looked kinda cool because it rippled in the current but as soon as i added another 450gph to the 330gph i already had it all dissapeared within 36hrs. anyway
10g- 250gph
5.5g cube- ~20-100gph depending on how clean the 'fuge intake is
20L- 180gph(i think, fluval 4plus internal)
180g- 500gph
1g- ~50gph
10g- ~20gph?(air powered corner filter so i'm only guessing)
29g- 850gph and i'm going to be adding another 200 to 400gph eventually

I never really did the math...

My 55g has an Eheim 2217 and a Whisper 60.
= [SIZE=-1]10.3 times per hour, assuming it is working at the maximum efficiency.

My 20g has an AquaClear 50 (formerly on the 55g) and an Elite Hush 20 (which I hate but it came with the tank). It also has a sponge filter.
= 15 times per hour

:o never realized that it was so high on both tanks! The 55 g has 6 goldfish, so it isn't overkill at all. The 20g has my new goldfish that is 5.5" long and cost lots of money, so I want it healthy until I switch him with 2 others in the 55g :)

In general, I stock lightly and ‘over filter’.

300 Gal… 1200 gph (bio - fine; mechanical - sucks)
125 Gal… 1850 gph (amazingly clear, not too much turbulence)
120 Gal… 2200 gph (amazingly clear, not too much turbulence)
90 Gal… 1,000 gph (bio - fine; mechanical lacking, was much cleaner w/ a 3rd AC110)
75 Gal… 1,000 gph (good filtration)
75 Gal… 750 gph (bio-fine; poo collects in low spots)
75 Gal… 600 gph (bio-fine; poo collects in low spots)
55 Gal… 500 gph (bio-fine; surprisingly little poo in the low spots)

All gph’s listed are rated flow rates…

Now for my little speech on actual -vs.- rated flow rates…

If you carefully calculate the interior dimensions of a 125 gal tank, you will find it actually holds around 110 US gallons when completely empty. Then add two inches of sand, a couple pieces of medium driftwood and plenty of rocks… and your looking at 90 gallons of water we are filtering… So 90 gallons is a little under 75% of 125... And HOBs flow at around 75% their rated capacity… So ya know what… using actual values aren’t as far off as most people will lead you to believe…

Based on my little experiments canisters typically flow at 55% their rated gph… although in the last year or so several manufacturers have started listing their hypothetic gph w/ media… which means brand new media… let it get a few months old and it will drop further… lol, even when they get honest they are half lying… sheeesh… lol

I have had community aquariums on and off over the past 15 years and about 2 years ago, I got into cichlids.
I was always led to believe that "whatever" the size of your tank, your filtration should turn over the entire volume of water a minimum of 4 times an hour.
I have also been led to believe that you can't have "too much" filtration.
I don't know if either of these statements are true or not.
Personally........I am a firm believer in overkill.
I would be interested in hearing views from other people.
