just a sump.. dump the fluval.. junk IMO. I have one and the Rena XP4 out preforms it.

Make a 50-75 gallon sump and turn over 1200 GPH.
:iagree:A sump is a much better choice that an FX5, IMO they are overrated, I had one for a while and don't get me wrong, they are great filters for the money but a sump completely outperforms them. A sump is more convenient to clean, allows storage space for heaters, C02 etc. and can be filled with way more biomedia than a canister. Just my 2c worth

Definitely FX5's x's 2. Thats what I plan on doing.
Plus a 405 for polishing :D but thats just me ;)

:iagree: i totally agree with you dude, IMO anyone who choses a canister filter without a sump or a canister filter on its own, has never used a sump on their tanks before.. sump hands down outperforms any cannister. Just have a look at what filtration all the monster tanks on here have, 99.9% of the time their wet/dry sump filters!

I would use a 40 gallon sump as the main filtration. Then, loop the fx5 in the sump. It will help keep the sump clean, and it (fx5) will stay cycled so you can take it out if you need to set up another tank in a hurry (i.e. hospital tank).

I used to use large canisters on all my tanks, as sumps seemed really complicated to me back then because of drilling the tank, installing plumbing etc. when a canister seemed much easier, i.e they are just plug and play. I installed a sump on my 6x2x2 and I am really pleased with the results, the water is always clear with no debris floating around in the tank. Canisters are annoying to clean, a sump you just open the lid and change the cotton wool, that's it.
