What's your take on the whole betta bowl deal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm suprised PETA hasn't come down hard on the Betta owners.... lol just kidding
I saw at Petco you can get your Betta purified and vitamin enriched betta water for $4.50 a liter so we know that even though the keep em in tiny bowls they get the best water!

Mine is in a filtered five gallon. The small bowls are for people who treat them as decoration and not a living creature. Petstores do this because they can put more inventory into a smaller space making higher profit. Just because they will survive doesn't make it a good idea. You could live your entire life in an 8x8 empty room. You would survive, but would you thrive? Would you want to?

I totally agree.

yeah the argument they live in rice paddy fields is not a good one as these are large volumes of stagnent water so will be subject to agrigation by the wind and water changes from rain so we can at least offer them that. a filter and a heater and a few plants and they should be fine .

I used to keep fish in bowls but i know better now. i am not against the idea of a 2 liter bottle sliced sideways and laid on its side whith plants, rocks etc. :banhim:

I agree with you.

They are best in small nano tanks.

How big a size of nano tank are you referring to?

Anyway, small can never be better! The bigger, the more there is for fishy to explore and stay entertained! :)

Its kinda sad that people keep them in tiny tanks and bowls thinking that's what they need! They are way smarter than danios, tetras, and goldies (not that they are better off in a small bowl either) and so require even more entertainement and interaction to be happy... which they don't get in a tight space.

Mine is in a 5g (which I still find small)... but when you think of it he easily would of ended up in a .5g (no heater nor filtration) with anyone else buying him... fortunately he is a very small betta (barely 1.3 inch). Actually I'm seriously thinking of moving my little guy to my new 15g! :D
I guess I have to forget about having a bolivian ram or apistogramma if this guy is in the tank though! :nilly:

Bettas shouldn't be kept in a bowl. The only reason they can is because they can breathe oxygen from the air as well as from water. So bad water conditions don't kill them as quickly as it would a goldfish or something. Either way fish bowls should be banned altogether.

I have 2 males at the moment. One is in a 40 breeder with a few tank mates, the other is in a 10 that he's helping keep cycled as a QT. I might consider a 5 gallon but that's about as small as I'd go and I'm afraid he'd be in it alone. My sorority tank has 5 females and is a 10.

at work we have 3 males in a 55 g. we make tanks and lemme tell you the pros use 6' tanks with around 14 partiioned parts theyre only 6'x6"x6". but they havethe bottom of partion bis open so 1' can be used to heat and filter the whole tank wit adequate circulation
