What's your thoughts on cichlids?

New world is definitely where my heart lies and fish I prefer over other, in terms of the more commonly available fish in the hobby for the most part cichlids from the americas like Oscar’s, Jack Dempsey, green terrors, Cichla, Crenichicla, parachromis, and Kronoheros, etc, will grow a decent amount quicker compared to peacocks, mbuna, tropheus, and haps, in Africa. I can say my Oscar’s definitely grew quicker than my Malawi hawks and gar, but there are anlways exceptions like geophagus which in my experience grow pretty slowly.
My alligator gar grew from 5-6 inches lil cutie to 11 inches beast in 2-3 months(if I remember correctly, and it ate my 7-8 inches silver arowana, at first I thought the silver arowana maybe jumped out, but the next day, I saw the alligator gar vomited out the silver arowana. I learnt a harsh lesson.

I’d love to keep a lot of the old world cichlids. Particularly the larger growing species.

Paretroplus menarambo have got to be one of my all time favourties.

A lot of the serranachromis are nice as well

A lot of the Africans are illegal in Australia though. Only one species of tilapiane is allowed as far as I know.

I feel you, in my country, butterkoferi and peacock bass are illegal, they're such cool fellas though.
