I'll leave out anything that I got when I first started out. The jerk I was getting fish from was the sort who actually tried to sell me a 2 gallon goldfish bowl with no air pump and a maroon clown at one time XD If that says anything. . . And me being young, stupid and not having web access at the time. . . I think the only thing he didn't flat out lie about was that you shouldn't mix goldfish with africans or either of those with "community fish", though those were basically anything that wasn't a carp or a cichlid(excluding angels).
Anyway. It'd be my first oscar. Moved to a new area, was told that this place would NEVER steer ANYONE wrong. And I was awwwing over the adorable baby oscars. The lady asked what size tank I had, I told her a 10 gallon and at her SUGGESTION brought home 2 oscars and 2 firemouths. I was told flat out that I'd never need a bigger tank for them. Well, I got online later that week to find a place where people owned the cute widdle buggers(had just joined a gaming forum a few months earlier, first forum I had ever belonged to and thought it'd be cool to join another, btw, the lady who told me that was fired a few weeks later for giving bad advice) and immediately saw how much of a retard I was. I got a 60 gallon tank with most of my savings account and took back all but one O. Then I was talked into getting a school of silver dollars(but the oscar needs companionship!) and a pleco as an "algae eater and bottom cleaner" Needless to say the nitrates were always through the roof. Took them all back, turned the tank into a community one, then put the small fish into a smaller tank and got a new oscar. The only "regret" I've got with the new one is that there was a little albino at petco the other day who was missing an eye

Poor baby. If I didn't have my little guy already I'd have gotten that one.
Second, anything from Marine Tech here where I live. Place's owners are the biggest crooks I've ever met. Gave me $10 credit(after a month and a half of me fighting with them for that much) when I brought them in $300 worth of coral and LR(I was downgrading at the time, half of it was the LR, and everything was bought from them) after promising me that I'd get "whatever their suppliers sold it to them for" in return and was called a con artist, a liar and a crook by them because I was demanding fair credit. I hope that they go out of business, that the one good person there gets a good job and excels in life(he's a great guy, he deserves better than to work for them. I'm NOT being sarcastic, he is the one person who has helped me the most with my saltwater tank and the only person there who seems to have a conscience) and that the two crooks who own the place are reduced to working fast food for the rest of their lives. And of course I've got no doubt that they make me out to be another of the "nutty customers" who was in there trying to get way more than they deserved(they seem to have a lot of those when you're still on their good list), especially since a couple of people who still go there are giving me dirty looks every time they see me now
I've seen lots of people on this thread (and the board in general) s****ing on Petsmart. But I've bought a bunch of fish there and I never had any problems with sick fish; in fact most of the fish in the store look pretty healthy and the people who work their for the most part know really well what they're talking about. Even the cashiers know what they're talking about.
...maybe I've just got a really good Petsmart here.
You must. Both of the chain stores around here are awful at giving advice. I was told by one girl at petsmart that her parent's oscar got to be 18" and was still growing and eating full grown KOI by the dozen each week, then she told me that if I wanted to get one from there to wait for a while. That the cichlid wall had a weird ailment. All of the fish "have algae growing on them" I didn't look any closer since even the albino oscars' ich was easily spotted, I was assuming that's what she meant(though then again she did say it was green algae?). Plus they don't know anything about the fish they sell. There was one day I decided to go in to both looking for supplies and was near the fish walls in each.
Petsmart: guy has a 30 gallon tank with 2 tinfoil barbs and 2 rainbow sharks. Wants more fish. Asked about a common pleco and was told that they'd "take up half of the living space in the tank" Then was told that his tank would look great with 2 blue gouramis. Walked away with them.
Petco: Lady had a 20 gallon. Has 2 red tailed botia loaches, an oscar, one of the "assorted african cichlids" AND a common pleco. She BOUGHT a jack dempsy, and a jewel cichlid. She nearly bought another african and a texas too, but the girl told her that adding more than 2 fish at a time would probably make the ammonia spike and therefore was dangerous. Not only was the girl encouraging her to come back in a week to get the other 2 fish and telling her how well they'd all go along in the 20 GALLON TANK, she was telling her about her former oscar. As in "Yeah, I miss him, but feeder goldfish are soo expensive when your oscar is the size of a dinner plate!" The lady had already told her that she was never going to get a bigger tank, that she didn't have room, money or desire to have one. Good thing fish only grow to the size of their tanks, right
