  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Way I look at it if ur ready is lik when I saw my first black ray I had to have it and I would do anything to own 1. Went from 1 wc a week to 2 and tripled my food cost a month doubled my filter services and gave up alotta not recommended tank mates and have a drip system in the mail.but I wouldn't give it up cuz I passion for keepin rays.

all you guys are saying read up read up but all info is not good so that's y we run it by you.For the love of god i do not know how many websites say it's ok to keep rays in a 50gallon

I really appreciate the non smart-ass comments guys :)

One thing I question, though. Is it not okay to both read up and ask? For starters, I said I don't plan on getting a ray any time soon. I'm merely asking questions because I'm not trusting every single source out there. I've run across a myriad of web sites that have said Arowanas are illegal in Florida, yet a couple of my LFS always carry them. You just can't trust anything on the internet.

Just trying to get some advice from ray owners, that's it. I'm reading, I'm doing the research, and I'm pretty sure I'm still not ready for a ray yet (getting my own place first would help :P). I just figured it's always better to research and ask questions way before getting a ray to better prepare myself.

@Pete, it's probably a good thing I don't plan on living in Florida for too much longer. I might end up staying, but if I don't I'd love to get a ray or two as long as my future state allows it. Thanks for the heads up, though, and great advice. Thanks :)

Thanks again guys :)

What the others mean by don't ask is because there are way too many people who ask simple questions like tanksizes, legality, or what to feed instead of reading the stickies. All these things are in the stickies already and they're there for a reason. If you read them all(which rarely ever happens) and THEN have questions, then I'm pretty sure people will actually want to help you.

I hope my comments do not come over as smart arse, I think we are often blunt to get the point across.

I find forums really useful, if I am new to a topic or hobby I read All of the threads I am interested in and spend days pouring over the threads and then I finally delve in and become an active member, ask questions and make posts.

Look at our post counts, we are always on here..I joined a year ago and I am over 1000 posts that is over 19 posts a week average. We see a lot of the same questions and probably get shorter with our replies. Most of our time / posts on here we spend answering questions and giving advice.

I hope the op here does get in to rays and that if they do they will do it with less problems and start with a decent tank and filter system with no illusions.

Keeping rays is easy and don't let people tell you different

as long as you know how to test your tank water do water changes heat the tank to the right temp just basic good fishkeeping

Have a big enough tank
Have more than enough filtration
Feed the right foods
Buy a healthy ray at the start that you have seen feeding

Then keeping a ray is easy as long As you have time to do the above things

All the things mentioned you should have found out if you had done the right amount of research before buying a ray

rays arent real i have a ray

I want a pint of what this bloke is on...although if you look at his location and user name it leads me to believe that the location is not fit for purpose...I.e. The fallout shelter is not "sheltering" much

....my fallout shelter is not real!

Nothing else to add except if you find yourself asking the questions of "What is the smallest species of ray" and "What is the minimum tank size" then you are not ready. Buy Richard Ross's book on keeping freshwater rays. It sums up just about everything you will need to know. Read it, take it to heart, then get youself a ray.
