When buying Cichlids????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok, lets go with firemouths and severums...they seem to take the same type water parameters as my other fish. I was reading on a website that said they were USUALLY not aggressive or territorial towards non-cichlids. Is this true? If I went with severums how many should I get? What is your experience with severums?

Heya! And when in doubt, throw the rule book out! When starting out, I got several "existing" tanks, and every one of them had the craziest combinations... that WORKED! Turtles with an oscar and goldfish.... African and South American Cichlids together with huge plecostemos... Huge variations in optimal water conditions, and they were HAPPY! I'm not talking about mirroring the fish's native environment, here. I'm talking about putting together a tank that appeals to YOU. Among the fish, so much depends on personality. And you never WILL get a definite answer because of that fact. So I think that if you like the fish, give it a try. It'd be great to have a back-up tank so if the fish doesn't agree with your attempt to blend in with the crowd you're creating it can go form its own bandwagon elsewhere instead of becoming part of the food chain.

LOL!!! I like your idea!!! I have been starting to come to that conclusion due to the fact I have posted numerous times in different areas and have not gotten a "hey this would work great" answer.

firemouths and severums would work good, as far as how many severums I'd say two if you want firemouths and other fish in the tank, you could probably get away with 3 but it may not work it's up to the fish, I started with 3 severums then 2 paired and I had to remove the 3rd do to aggression. As far as african's and american cichlids in the same tank it's not the aggression most have a problem with it's that they come from totally different waters ph etc. wise. You can do it I have seen it done but in my eyes one type of fish suffers from being in the wrong water so the other can thrive, just my opinion though some see nothing wrong with it.

Your question is a little broad still. You need to figure out if you want Africans or New World cichlids. If you want a lot active, different colored cichlids (like 20 or so), African Mbuna would do well in your 90. You could also go with African Peacocks or Haps, which are colorful and get a little larger than Mbuna.

If you want New World cichlids and want a few species, you can try Severums, JDs, Convicts, and etc. A 90 is also good for one large "glassbanger." If you want to go this route, try a Red Devil, Flowerhorn, or similar sized fish. I guess you would not want to go this route because you don't want something super aggressive (even though they are the best kind:))

I have never had a cichlid that is aggressive towards clown loaches.

I actually wouldn't mind a glassbanger but I only say not super aggressive because I don't want it to kill my tiretrack, and indo tiger dat.:WHOA:
