so i have a pair of convicts, one pink and one standard. less than a week after they were in the tank they laid eggs and ushered about 40 fry into the world. i want to get rid of the pair so that i can change the tank into a different setup that doesnt include convicts. i will eventually sell the fry as well but i want to prevent more breeding and would also like to allow for a cleaning crew to be put in (otto's, plecos and shrimp), something i think the fry would be ok with but the parents simply wont allow. how big should the fry be before they can do without parental guidance?

well what type of groumies u have?? and how many?? put the pair of rams in the 10 and the tetras and depend on the groumies and how many add them to the 10. then put the male in the 7 gallon and female in the 5. or just use a divider for the 10

You should notice a behavioral difference, with the fry beginning to wander further from their parents immediate area of protection more and more. Once they no longer huddle around their parents then I think you're safe to remove the parents. I would guess 1 month. I'm sure you could remove the parents earlier but not sure that it would be good for the youngsters.

But just my opinion, would be interested to hear from others. I'm in a similar situation at the moment with firemouths. I'm wondering when to remove the young to a separate grow-out tank from the community display tank.

ya, the fry have already begun to wander about without parental supervision. so i think it's probly safe to remove the parents. its been about three weeks since they hatched. maybe a little more.

I usually pull the fry (using the trust ole turkey baster) when I begin to notice the male eating them in an effort to breed again.

i have a p.r.q. in 55 with fry since 4/27 & everyone is groovie! actually, i have no intention on removing her until she start to wildout. i just give them proper filtration & keep them full.
