What kind of cycle?
If fishless, leave any media you plan on changing/cleaning out.
No fish, nothing to filter out.
If with fish, then you need mechanical media in your filters.
Notice I left any reference to Bio media out.
The majority of tanks do not need any added media to house bacteria. The in tank surfaces provide more than adequate material for the colonies to grow on.
No debate, please..If you disagree, fine by me.

I would leave both mechanical and bio media in the filters. Bio media IMO is a no brainer, you'll develope beneficial bacteria. Merchanical is not really needed if you are going fishless but it wont hurt anything.

+1

My point about mech in a fishless cycle is, why develop a bacterial colony on a media that will be changed/cleaned?
Certainly on a new tank you would not want to disturb your new bacteria.
Let the colony establish on areas that stay constant.

Ah ok I see what your saying. Sorry, I was confused by your original post but now I see. I don't think the op said if they were using fishless cycling or not but your answer definitely takes both methods into account
