Hi,

Kids have a great skill of asking the obvious. My five year old nephew who has been closely observiing the Aro and its tank mate, raised a very cool question which got me thinking. "When does the Arowana sleep?"

The monster is seen constantly swimming during the day and night. I have seen him yawn in the afternoons; but that's about it. The moments the lights go off, his nocturnal side kicks in and is very active. What is the their sleep behaviour? Do they ever sit still .. it will be 12 months in a few weeks and I have never seen him still.

Hi fai.. kids can really be somethin.. i actually googled "Do fish sleep?" and got quiet a lot of answers.. have a look at that.. i really don't know if you could explain that to a kid.. best thing is to ask him what he thinks.. and agree with what he says.. personal experience speaking.. my friend's son asked me where do babies come from while we were driving ha ha ha.. cheers..

I think the answer is different depending on what kind of aro. My silver is always on the move---back and forth---only stopping to look at me :D. My big jar however, will stop moving back and forth and stay in one spot. He moves just enough to stay in that spot. I've actually,I believe, spooked him awake by turning on the light. He hit the tops and about 5 gallons of water hit the floor. Now I'm more careful.

My experience with sleeping aros,

I hate to dig up an old thread but I know the answer because of a documentary about sleep that I recently saw.

So unlike us, many animals have the ability to sleep with half of their brain while the other half is still awake. Then they switch and sleep with the other half. This way they can always keep one eye out for predators while they catch their zzzzz's. Gives new meaning to the term half awake.

They kind of do...
When my arowana was in my 2 Feet outside after 6 p.m it gets dark so when i check on him around 9 i see his eyes heavily faced downwards like drop eye..
They are stationary at the time, their fins are moving but they will be in one spot just moving a few c.m's back and fourth
Also,When i had a jar(had him till 6" purchased at 4") he used to rest on top of my power filter...
So they do sleep or rest..

My silver aro lies at the bottom of the tank when the lights are out and stays stationary.
