Hi all,

Just wondering when these beasts actually turn red or anything but grey/green? Seems like I've had them forever!

Cheers!

Don't know about about festae, never kept them but mayans should start colouring up by about 3 inches.
Mayans can be quite varied in colour and appearance so being exact can be hard.

Without a dominant male in the tank, my females would stay the color below

with a dominant male in the tank, below (about 4"-5")

With the uropthalmus I kept, I believe lots of water changes and a diet high in carotenoids and spirulina seemed to bring out color (and spawning behavior of course)

Wow they stay ugly? FFS, may just feed them to the dog...
I trust this is a joke?
I don't want to think a fish would be fed to the dog because the owner didn't do research first, though I suppose it is not a first in the hobby.

They won't stay ugly if you provide the right conditions, but I believe that's the way it is with any fish.
And just in case you haven't seen it, below is video I took of uropthalmus in a Cenote Azul in Mexico. I think they look fabulous, especially when hit with just the right sunlight.

First;y I ordered festae, secondly I assume you're a vegan with the sort of remark...?

Of course, I'm a vegan and also an animal rights activist.
What the hell dude?
I'm very much omnivorous (borderline carnivorous to be fair), and that is completely irrelevant to the fact that you bought a fish without knowing how it would turn out. You made a mistake, everybody makes them. But not everybody makes the victim of their mistake pay for it.

While we're at it, how is the fact you've ordered it changing anything?
