Around 8pm to whenever I wake up (8-11am). My wife likes going to the kitchen after it's dark(meaning the main light is on/off about 5 -10 times throughout the night) so I try to cut down on the shock to the fish

they go on whenever I wake up, and I turn them off whenever I get home and it's dark out. I try to match the outdoor light as closely as I can because my room is so dark.

I have my lights on during the day, but I do work during the day also. This tempts me into having the lights on during the night but I'm not sure how much the fish will be stressed out by doing this. Plus it won't feel like a natural set up to them anymore.

It's actually nice to see how people actually have different light settings.

I got rid of all my live plants and cut my lighting to about 3-6 hours a day most days. Cut my power bill down by about 25%. Next step is LEDs.

I have lights on 24/7 day lights on most the day bright moon lights on for a few hours then a really dim blue led strip that I never turn off because I'm to lazy to get behind the tank and unplug it when its not needed.

Yeah I'm going this route on most of my house lights including my fish tank lights. It saves three ways: Less power, less heat, and they last forever.
