When do you replace your UV bulbs ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Like green algae on the glass or green water? It wont affect algae on the glass much..

Does an absolute awesome job at green water with proper flow.

Replace the bulb after 12 months at the latest. Even if the bulb is still working the vapours in the bulb degrade so that after 12 months only opproximately 30% of the UVC is being produced compared to a new bulb. Unless you are running very slow flow rates through the UV lamp you aren´t sterilizing very much after 12 months. it´s also very important to clean the quartz sleeve at least every 12 months with a week acid like diluted hydrochloric or a ph lowering product containing some acid. this gets rid of any calcium deposits on the quartz sleeve which can drastically reduce the usefulness of the lamp.

I agree

I work for a lab and am in charge of the RoDI water systems for the lab. We change the UV bulbs every 12 months. It is the life of the bulb, not really how clean or dirty the water is. The water runs through micron filters, carbon, and other membranes before reaching the UV bulb.

The bulb will still shine bright, and may still be good, but for what its worth, replacing it every 12 months will give you piece of mind its still working.

I have brown algae, grows thickest where the sun stays the longest. Pain in the arse. I read once that if you have brown algae, to use more light, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

What kind of difference in water quality ?

I just got the bulb.... Does it need a kit :irked:

I love mine too. UV is a valuable tool.
Water is definitely clearer and algae is not growing. You don't need the kit but if your rubber seal are more than 3 years old I would change it out.

Oh ok. Thanks for the tip . The units only 6 months old at this point ( I backtracked and found my order sheet)

And yeah the tank its on has much clearer water and zero algae. (I do large water changes and understock a bit) You saw my vids :)

hi all,

I am newbie.....

Was looking for the part to post my question, gosh....

Well, i just built my first fish pond with waterfall.
last part is to install my Oase Bitron UVC 72C.

Can i put the UVC somewhere out there without cover? or should i protect this UVC from sun and rain?

help me out please,,

thanks,

Some UV units are submersible.... others are not...

Fort example, the Danner UV units are submersible, so you can install them where they will be exposed to weather with no ill results...

For example, the Turbo Twist UV units are not submersible, so you will need to protect them from weather as well as excessive humidity...

I am not familiar with the Oase Bitron UVC units but at a glance I did not see the term "submersible", thus I would suspect you will need to protect them from weather.
