When fish die, do they sink or float?

i'm not sure what you'd consider huge, he's 10 or 11" and stout. the LSN was only 6". i've seen him ram a 12" bichir when it got into his territory and chase him off.
i'm just trying to figure out why it died. i want to replace it but only if i think the next one has a good chance of surviving....... anybody know the growth rate of a Merodontotus Tigrinus ? seems like a cool fish and one you don't see everyday. anybody have one and know if it'll do okay in water with a pH of 7.9?

That is a big royal. I'd love to see pics. If you thinking about a tig I'd suggest a juruense. Imo it logs just as good but is cheaper and more hardy.
