I've heard of people not wanting to run sand or gravel in very large tanks due to the extra hastle of maintaining it. My question is when is a tank too big to have a substrate such as sand or gravel on the bottom? I've been looking at tanks anywhere from 125g-180g but would still like to have sand at the bottom. Thanks for the responses!

Ummm, I already had an answer to your subject title but I won't go there. :grinno:

It's really all a matter of preference. I personally don't care for bare bottom tanks. They look like prison cells to me. They are from my experience hard to keep the ph stable.

Agreed, if you like gravel or sand, put it in there. I don't like barebottom tanks either! If you don't want to maintain it, keep smaller tanks LOL...

I have sand in my 125 gal... I don't like bare bottom display tanks.

I have a few bare bottom breeding/grow out tanks but to be honest, I don't like them either. Since I have decent lighting in my fishroom the bottom of bare bottomed tanks are always covered in algae. It's just as easy for me to keep my sand bottomed tanks clean...

me personally, i wouldnt do sand/gravel in anythign over 55g

bare bottom i know people dont like them but 4 big monsters all the gravel/ sand will end up in the filter or corner so its just practical not 2 add any but its up 2 peoples preference

I think for larger tanks, sand would be great. I use it in mine and my stock tank with my bigger cats. I use that play sand too, a whole lot cheaper then trying to buy 20lb bags to fill it.If you had gravel, imagine gravel vacing all that. With sand, all the waste stays on the top and you know where to clean. Your not going in blind like with gravel. Or you can get those big river rocks I guess

Yea, I definitly think I'll stick with the sand option. I've got gravel in my 72 and 90, let me tell you that can be a pain to clean every week. I couldn't imagine adding a 150 gal + on top of that. That's enough to make anyone want to get out of the hobby!
