When is it too big?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There is no "too big" for tanks with sand. My Malaysian trumpet snails clean the sand for me in my 220 gal.

I don't think there is a limit to size of the tank. It will all depend on, fish doing sand sifting duties, filtration, water movement, ect. If done right, 10,000,000,000,000gal's would be my cut off.

Well, we'll see what happens after this week. I may be looking at purchasing a 180 gal tank. The problem is there are fish in it at the moment so I may need to make some dividers for the 72 and 90 until I can get it set up. I'm gonna have to ask santa for a couple more ac110's and an fx5...lol.

I wouldn't do gravel in a large tank but I would definetly do sand. I NEVER EVER maintain my sand. Maybe give it a little stir every now and then in certain areas but other than that, what maintenance really need to be done with sand? Everything sits on top of it.

Bare bottom tanks are horrible. They are the worst looking tanks ever. I would rather keep a tank empty with no water or fish then have a bare bottom tank.

O god, the mythology continues. If you going to setup a tank, do it right without crappy HOBs. 2 Fx5s or 2 other canisters will do fine. Don't settle for cheap AC110 crap.

after the problems i've had with bare-bottom and the fact that I don't really like them, there isn't a cut-off level for me.

Have 200 or 250 or is it 300lbs of PFS in my 300gal. Looks pretty good and I have under sand/gravel jets to help keep junk off the bottom and circulate the lower part of the tank which has a sump filter.

My 240gal is bare, with black tint on the back and bottom, super easy to maintain. I just have one FX5 (looking to add a second one), and two Seio 1500gph pump for circulation (they might actually be the model before the 1500, can't remember for sure).

I actually like the look of both. Next tank I have with out fish (smaller tank) I might try spray painting the bottom out side with some texture paint that looks like sand.

OK, OK. I am going to go there. eh eh eh hem.......

I figure since the various oceans are the biggest "tanks", and they prefer to use sand in them, then I say sand all they way. I would say that any tank bigger than the ocean would be too big to put sand it. LOL. Just because you could buy enough!!
