When it comes to NLS food, what size do I get?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Squirtle - my loaches were raised on the regular 1mm Cichlid formula, but the TherA works just as well.

Thanks RD, Thera Is just easier as I dont think the cichlid formal should be used for roselines, tin foils geo etc I could be wrong ? but this way I can just feed the same food. I just love the colors you get from it, even my oscars are showing amazing colors I never would of guessed they can go so bright.

From what I gather the formulas only vary slightly from another to better provide for the specifics but could be feed across the board with no problems.

My Old set up had... Tropheus, Petrchromis, roselines, Cyathophranx, MBU, bristlenose and I fed the tank mainly 1mm cichlid formula and maybe 1lb of Thera+A mixed into the 5lb bucket. Worked out great! (MBU ate larger pellets only unless I pinched some smaller between my fingers and waited for him to snap).

I think a sole diet of Thera+A is not ideal for the humans... the water gets a strong odor of the garlic and the water does cloud a bit from overfeeding that stuff. I can over feed any other formula but Thera+A gets pretty nasty at times.

Speaking of what size pellet to get... A few weeks ago I posted that I feed NLS, but couldn't get my flowerhorn to eat it consistently. I was using 2mm pellets. However, he would eat Hikari Cichlid Gold floating mini's like crazy. I decided to try NLS 3mm pellets. Guess what? He went nuts and is now back on NLS.

Thanks to all the advice! I think I'll start my boys on the 3mm and hope for the best. If it's too big for the firemouth, I can still finish off he food I have until he gets bigger, but the sinking should give him a better chance than he has now. Thanks again! :]

RD,

How many 3mm pellets would you allow a 7 - 8" flowerhorn eat a day? Just as a test to see how much he would eat, this morning I fed my FH 1 or 2 pellets at a time. I didn't feed the next until he was completely done. He ate 30 3mm pellets before he started expelling some out of his gills. He is small for his age and I'm trying to get some size on him. However, I don't want to over do it either.
