When Should I Feed My JD Again?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
She eats everything I throw in there. Tears it up in her mouth, then spits some bits out all over the tank. It's not that she leaves full pieces, but she doesn't eat the entire piece, just most of it, then spits some of it out and leaves it.

She hasn't turned down any food at all, and I know to remove uneaten food. It's more a matter of "is the spitting out chewed up bits normal"? I can't really clean that up without gravel vacuuming (I do water changed by gravel vac once a week). Like I said, I've never had a bigger fish that eats like this before.....so please excuse the noobish questions if this is normal.

Thanks for all of the input everyone.

Well it looks like the JD has settled down. He has claimed a big hollow tank ornament as his cave and sits in there most of the day. If any people come around and he sees them, he comes out and begs for food. Really love this fish. Wish I would have done a tank for one of these sooner.

The spitting out the small peices is some thing that jd's do. Alot of the time it is just small peices and particaulls falling out of there gills while they chew and swall. U diddnt mention what size the jd is. But my pair is 6 and 8 inches and they do it with every thing to. Even peices of the pellets full out. It is nothing to be worried about. And they are messy eaters along with pretty much all cichlids. They do have a great personality to them. Good pick up and good luck with them. I love mine.

Thanks a lot man. That was exactly what I was looking for, and it's exactly what he's doing. Just a sloppy eater. And he's about 7 or 8 inches long.

How much percent water changes do you do and how frequently? I've been doing 10% each weekend. I think I'm going to have to up it to 15-20% weekly with how messy this guy is.

I believe fish love fresh water. I think if you are going to do a water change...25%-30% is the standard, once per week. I work a 9-4 job, no wife, no kids....so I have a bit more free time and do 30% every 4-5 days.

Some members do more...some do less. Anything is better then nothing.
