When the fish are still growing and settling, I test strictly to find out what a good water change schedule should be. If the nitrates are high, I step up the water changes. Once my schedule is set, I don't typically test my water.
This is what I do too. More tests in the beginning...less as it goes. I usually use the API test kit a lot in the beginning, once everything seems good I usually don't bother too much, but I might break out one of the test strip packs every now and again just to see how I'm doing. If something seems off, I'll break out the API test kit.
