Once my tanks are settled in, I only test when something seems off.

When the fish are still growing and settling, I test strictly to find out what a good water change schedule should be. If the nitrates are high, I step up the water changes. Once my schedule is set, I don't typically test my water.

This is what I do too. More tests in the beginning...less as it goes. I usually use the API test kit a lot in the beginning, once everything seems good I usually don't bother too much, but I might break out one of the test strip packs every now and again just to see how I'm doing. If something seems off, I'll break out the API test kit.

Same here. Once I start seeing a noticeable trend with testing I don't test until something seems wrong. Every now and then I break out the random test but for the most part I just follow a tight feeding and water change schedule and everything has gone fairly smoothly.
