When to add prime during a water change?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Basing the dose on the whole volume of the tank is because they are adding it directly to the tank, assuming after they finished changing the water or even before

Like it states on the bottle, it is better to add to the new water first (in the bucket before adding it to the tank), this way you save more of the prime and remove the chloramines first before the fish come in contact with it

well see this is the problem with that, idk about you but i would hate to do water changes on my 200 gallon with buckets! what i usually do is add prime before putting water in it and i've never had a problem, plus if you follow the instructions and only add enough prime for the new water , then you'll save the same amount of prime

With big tanks I understand, especially if you are using a python water changer as well. In that case the prime should be added before/during the water change to lessen the stress on the fish.
You could also use Seachem's Safe to save even more on big tanks

yeah i get it when i had my little 20 gallon i did water changes with buckets and i did add the prime in the bucket

I use safe the last few wc's ,it goes in the tank( I Split the difference between amount changed and total vol.)then I go turn on the faucet.....

Wow I've been adding tap water and then adding prime and never had a problem. I guess I should reverse that method if others say they do it that way.
