When to change your heater????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had mine for about two years and still operating 100% with no problems. I do keep an extra heater on hand just in case. I think once a heater isn't keeping temp or fluxes too much it's time swap it out

Well, I have actually never replaced a heater and that is 5+ years. I will be replacing all of them once I set my tanks back up (moved) since they were in a storage unit with rather extreme temperatures. But I also plan to use a temperature controller to make sure a broken heater doesn't boil my fish.

Once I do set my tank back up I probably won't replace until it breaks, since I will be less worried due to the controller.

yeah, i'd recommend a temperature controller too. that way you're not guessing. Easier to tell when a Heater needs to go

That's a lot of years

Why would you replace a heater that is working? I have some heaters that are over 20 years old and working fine. IMO, many of the new heaters on the market are junk.

I always just keep a spare on hand. If it's still working, I see no reason to replace it.

Moved to Setup and Filtration.
