I clean mine once a month. Some people clean theirs more often. I never "clean" my bio media maybe just a rinse here and their.

i clean 1/3 of my FX5's mechanical media. then 6 months later i clean 1/3 of my Eheim 2028's mechanical media, then 6 months later rotate back to the FX5. my water has been crystal clear for the past year. these filters are on my 120.

however, there's no real answer to this question, since there's so many variables.

putting time a side( for now;)), i would clean the filter when its performance begins to diminish. i.e. reduced flow, water seems not so clear.. etc etc.. then judging by the time it took to get to that point, clean a little earlier the next time. then u will know when to clean it! you will need to keep records of when u clean ur filters, in order for this to work!

only the mechanical media needs to be cleaned.. and only a partial amount.

Honestly for canisters, when the flow is restricted then clean them, leave otherwise, just MO

I do 50% water changes and vacuum the gravel weekly and I clean the canisters maybe once every 6 months

No offense, but the idea of water passing through crud for a year?
How is that a good idea.
Using flow to determine cleaning intervals?
Child please..
Sounds like hooking my pool pump up to run through the septic tank.
I would start at 2-3 week cleanings, see the condition of the media and amounts of crud trapped.
Nitrate levels would be a pretty good indicator as well.
Canisters are good filters, but they trap the crud, not vaporize it.
