Amongst the Catfish & Plecos
Four weeks ago, my 32" TSN tried very unsuccessfully to eat my 26" ID. She just managed to deglove the entire back end of him, removing about 40% of his skin and damaging a lot of muscle. I have managed to keep him free of infection this entire time with strong antibiotics, but he's not eating and seemed to take a turn for the worse yesterday. He's still upright, and is just laying quietly on the bottom. I don't want to euthanize him if he has a chance of making it, but I know he's suffering. I'd guess his chances to be around 10-15% at this point. Two days ago, I would have given him a 40% chance as he was still swimming around normally.

I'm concerned that he just doesn't have enough fat storage to have the energies needed to repair that kind of damage. I cannot get him to eat at all, and he's usually a pig. I don't want to stave off an infection only to have him starve to death.

Here's the progression:
Day one. Much of the skin is still hanging on:

Day 10ish the damaged skin sloughes off:

Day 28. You can see where some muscle died, but also some regrowth. It's his behavior that has gone down hill now which makes me think the battle is being lost to something going on inside.

gawd, that looks terrible. It sounds to me like he is sliding downhill. I would just try and look out for a few more days as sometime fish make a crazy comeback. If looking worse in a few days, I would prob put him to sleep. :(

Sorry to say, I think it's time. That looks ridiculously painful.:(

I imagine the pain itself may be doing more damage then good at this point. As long as he's upright I'de give him a chance to pull threw.. but as soon as he goes sideways I'de pull the proverbial plug. I'm not sure if there is even anything you can do to help w/ his pain.. imo that may help him bounce back. But I've never seen a fish pull threw that kinda damage.. and Kudos for keeping him going this long. As long as my fish/pets fight to live I do my best.. but once i see they've lost ther will, I let them go =(

Yeah. I haven't seen that will to live go from him yet, and he's still very much upright. He's not having to fight to stay upright at all. His breathing isn't rapid or anything either. I totally agree with you on the whole pain thing. I feel like if there was actually something I could do to relieve the pain, he might eat and have some fuel to continue. I just don't know of anything I can do that wouldn't just end up doing more damage.

I was really shocked at how well he had been doing all this time so I just kept trying for him. If I don't see a little bit of turn around with the new antibiotics, I know I'm going to have put him down. I guess the moment he's not upright, I will know it's over. I really thought if he actually had a chance of making it since he's survived this long, not gotten an infection and was actually regrowing muscle and skin. I want to give him every chance without just prolonging his life if death in inevitable since he's suffering so much. This is always such a hard call.

Well, I guess I'm not euthanizing yet. He's in the pond with two slightly smaller catfish that just dont bother him (I have nowhere else for them atm). However, just now, one was hoping to share the hiding spot next to the bucket and he surprised me by successfully defending his territory. There is too much fight left in him. I think I need to continue to given him a chance.

If he's kiciking let him kick! Also is it perhaps a way to bandage his wound? and then continue Anti-Biotics until it regrows I know if(analogy) I get a cut it heals faster with a bandaid vs no bandaid at all.

PS: He'll make it threw, I was unable to save my ABF when my Sen tore of his skin but big fish are strong fighters

I think leaving this open is the only way. The handling alone would probably kill him between stress, new damage and introducing bacteria from my hands, nets, surfaces, etc.

I've treated some pretty jacked up fish before, but nothing that comes near the level of damage this guy has. This would basically be like taking a peeler and removing about a half inch deep of flesh from all of your legs. It's super gnarly. Closest thing I've seen to this was in the animal hospital on a couple "hit by car" victims I treated. The healing process takes a long time, and the risk of infection is high. Good news for the fish is that he gets to stay in the antibiotic bath 100% of the time reducing the risk of infection.

And, yes. He is a serious fighter to have made it this far.

omg I'm sorry... I can't imagine what you must have felt when seeing that for the first time. I really really hope he makes it.

I was pretty pissed. This is the second ID she has gone after. The first was was about 4 inches smaller and nearly as beefy as this guy. I thought for sure the size on this guy would keep her from trying anything, since there was no way he was even going part way down the hatch. Obviously, I was very wrong. I keep telling her its a good thing I like her so much!

Good Luck...I hope he keeps fighting!! Keep up the good work!!
