I have some 3 day old convict fry, when do i need to start tryin gto feed them something, and will cruched up flake food work?

I'd be doing green water, teeny bits of mashed egg yolk and maybe the tiny flake if they eat it.

yeah crushed up flake is fine just make sure to crush it up into a fine powder and then mix it up in some tank water and then pour in right over the fry swarm so that the flake sinks right away into the swarm, and you can feed them once they are free swimming, you will also want to feed them like 4-5 times a day while they are this little

If your tank is well aged with alge growing on the rocks and driftwood I let the fry feed on that for for the frist few days free swimming and then start baby brine shrimp and pellets ground into a powder I use Hakari Bio-Gold or NLS they both grind up into a fine powder pretty easly.

yeah aquanero brings up a good point, i also did this when i had small festae fry, they benefit from the extra veggie matter so dont scrape any algae away while you have small fry in the tank as they will graze on it throughout the day

Not to hijack the tread or anything, but what is to stop the parents from eatting that?

parents wont bother with a fine powder in the water as is isnt big enough for them to consider worth it to eat, they will go after large pieces of flake or pellets but not when its crushed up into a powder

letting them eat algae is an excellent idea, and so is crushing flakes and pellets. You can feed convict fry at about 3 days old, once their egg sack is gone they are ready to feed. Baby brine shrimp are a great staple food for fry.

Hikari first bites has been my staple food for both my latest batches of convict and rainbow fry and I would highly recommend it. The fry are growing faster and are very healthy.

My suggestion is to take the advise that has been provided and let them graze on algae and then feed them a varied diet of pellets, flakes, and baby brine shrimp with first bites as the staple. iI think you will be pleased with the results.

Not totally true, my parent convicts go nuts when I feed the fry. They race back and forth as fast as they can for about 30 seconds then back off. I wouldn't worry about it too much though as the pieces of food are so small the fry end up getting 90% of the food anyways.
