When to know its time to change filters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i change out my filters out after they start to rip. i wash mine in dirty fish water and use them till they cant be used. also with my oscar tank i use dried oak leaves inside the filter bag with no carbon in it. one more thing i just replaced my filters this week 1st time in 6months. with good cleanings they should last you awhile.

I use hob to supplement my canisters. Every week or so I rinse it off. The carbon is surely no good anymore in the filter pads but you shouldn't need that anyway. Although I'm pretty sure if you soak it in saltwater it will reactivate the carbon

I agree

False, there is no practical way to reactivate carbon. In fact, salt water would probably clog it more.

I have one HOB that I use for mechanical only, the flow rate is my indicator that I need to change/clean the media.

My cans get done around 3 months in-between i sniff the water if its funky i clean them sooner.
Hobs every few weeks mine only get used to break surface tension .
