When to safely add oscars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I put the smaller oscar in today. Hes been in about 12 hours or so, and no dramas yet.
If all goes well, ill put the other one in in a week or two, just to make sure the bioload has adjusted

rule of thumb... if it can fit in an oscars mouth... he will probably eat it

that being said... Ive had oscars that grew up with other fish and obviously the oscars grew much faster
they didnt bother the fish they grew up with

but... depends on the fish too
I think if you feed live food... the other tankmates probably have a little more to worry about then if the oscars were raised on pellets for example

just keep him well fed and fat lol
should be ok :)

If your oscars are picking on anyone just make sure they are always well fed, Yes if it will fit in its mouth itll probably
end up there. But ive kept convicts with adult oscars almost entirely with no problem, A Oscar with a fish in its mouth
is an oscar that isnt being fed routinely. There should never be a time your Oscars can fit your others in their mouths.
And do us all a favor and dont try feeders. By 1 year old weve always had oscars right at 10"+. Weve never taken
our convicts out or anyone else that was small. In fact Oscars seem to do better with smaller fish. Its the large
ones that will always fight them. In almost every situation our Oscars would be picked on by a larger cichlid.
Even though Oscar get big a 10'' Oscar is no where near capable of standing up for itself to another large cichlid
of the same size. Our Oscars back in the day would eat a feeder or two but would never touch anyone else.
We had a really nice semi aggressive 240 set up with three Oscars a hand ful of convicts and three JD one EBJD.
And a couple of firemouths. without problems. If you want to keep Oscars just make sure they will be the biggest
in the tank overall. You wont see any problems down the long run.
