When to upgrade??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the responses. Does the amount of territory they need to "stake out" as personal space change if they're a mated pair? I do understand and agree with the inconvenience of frequent water changes in order to maintain acceptable water parameters, but speaking to the territory issue; at what physical size of fish does a mated pair need to be moved into a larger tank? Again I understand there are numerous variables in asking this original question (ex: amount of tank filteration, diet, etc.). If you see no signs of aggression from territory disputes, is water chemistry the only factor in upgrading to a larger tank?

in my opinion, yes. but as i said, the answers will vary greatly. 75 is big enough for 2 oscars if you take care of it. with the right filtration once a week water changes will be fine. it wouldn't be 3-4 times a week like all of these people who exaggerate GREATLY claim.

Fishbum said twice a week. No one else mentioned anything about it.

You're the only exaggerator on this thread who has said 3-4 times a week. :screwy::screwy::screwy:

nobody said 3-4 someone only said twice a week, but yes if they were a mated pair then this would be different as they would hold a territory together, with really good filtration, and keeping up with water changes, you could make a 75 work for a mated pair or 2 that werent fighting but i personally like for my fish to have a little more swimming space than that, iv seen videos on youtube with 2 oscars in 75g tanks and they just seem a little cramped to me, i mean im sure as long as you kept water clean they would grow fine, but i think they would really thrive better in a larger tank, i have a 125 and never had more than 2 Os in there at a time with other dither fish like tiger barbs, i like being able to see my fish have plenty of room to swim around and interact with others in the tank as well as me

50% twice week will be fine. that's what i do on my 300 and it's VERY stocked...

Buy a test kit follow the instructions on Ammonia, Nitra, and PH that'll tell ya how much and how often you need to change the water. Also test for KH this'll tell ya how often you need to change your carbon.

Some tanks require larger water changes than others do to the size of the fish, type of fish, amount of fish, frequency of feeding and/or over feeding.

IMO 75 gal for 1 year than double it.

Yep...2, as long as they're compatible. Good filtration and 50% weekly w/c should handle it. But if they're not compatible even a 125 or some such won't work; if they hate each other just separate them.

My own personal rule is greater then 4 times the fishes length from side to side and 1 and 1/2 times the fishes length from front to back. That's just me so 16 inch O imo would need a tank longer then 64 inches and deeper (front to back) then 24 inches or at least those deminsions. I just feel fish need room to get a bit of exercise. That's just me though I have a friend who has kept a single O in a 55 for a few years and it looks healthy and happy as can be.

And as far as water changes I still tote buckets and am currently at over 400 gallons of tanks. Isee it as a humbeling experiance and I think it shows my dedication to the hobby and my fish. And also I don't have a single sink in my house that my python hooks up to. But it is very humebling that even without the ease of the python I would still have no problem doubeling my current load.
