So I just set up my cichlid tank with two johanni and one jewel cichlid. At first they all squabbled but now they are double teaming one of the johannis. Its never ending. At what point do I need to worry about their safety. I can always bring it back and get another fish any time. My lfs is awesome like that. How long does the dominance struggle usually last?

A few pics of the fish. The jewel and blue gang up on the orange and black one

I'd say if they go after the other one a lot, then something needs to be done, either get rid of it/trade it for another cichlid or add a few more cichlids in there to try and divert the aggression

The orange one is now hiding behind the filter and won't leave. Likely going to have to take it back tomorrow. Funny thing is it was the tank alpha when I bought them all.

How big is your tank?
When it comes to malawi I usually keep a group of at least 8 individuals per species. Then it won't be so much fighting.

These guys are like six inches plus by the way. They are pretty big

So they don't fight much any more but they will not let my orange johanni down from the top of the tank most of the time. It chills behind the filter. It seems okay, but I'm worried that the situation is stressful and I want it to be happy. I have to option of returning it to my lfs for another, but I have grown attached. Any input on cichlid behavior would be appreciated. I was also told the orange one might be female, Idk for sure though.
