When to worry about bullying?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The jewel is likely the meanest one there. He's just smaller than the new one so he can't compete. Nobody seems battered. They don't actually hit the orange one just chase. I think with more structures it might get better. There is a limited number of territories right now

i know they are the most territorial and have a mean streak.. i was afraid for the africans.. but as long as it is working for you.. sometimes it does..Jewel cichlids can be a nasty fin nippers if you don't keep it well fed.

need more decors in the tank. That will fix them after the battle ends. Someone gonna give in sooner or later, but the decors will prevent the targeting and bullying to death.

So after adding another structure and shuffling everything, she still hides behind the filter and they chase her down whenever she goes near the bottom. Idk the sex of my fish but I'm lead to believe its three male one female. I'm seriously debating returning her so she doesn't have to hide like that, but I have grown attached. The stock is..

Jewel cichlid, four inches
Eb johanni, four inches
Orange johanni (her), five inches
Some kind of yellow striped thing, likely six inches.

Tank is 37 gallon bow front. Its tall. Any more ideas before I part ways? Is it just too overstocked? The others never fight. Is it possible that she just likes the filter. I didn't move that when I shuffled the decorations. Maybe its a mating thing? She has been tail flipping a lot and getting bright orange in front of the other fish

what you really need is more females,or no females. You need at least 3.The reason is the males chase the females. If you have one,she is the only one being chased.Between 3 fems the chasing will be divided and none of them will be too stressed. It's too much for just one to handle.Hope this helps.

I figured that, can't fit three more fish that size though. Likely going to have to do what's best for her and swap her in

So I'm going to update this thread with a discussion I had off topic on another. I replaced the johanni with thus guy, was told it was male, but he won't fight back and is becoming a top of the tank fish too. View attachment 812364

They are relentless in chasing him and I've noticed a torn fin or two in an hour. I rearranged my tank after taking the fish out, and immediately the blue johanni was on him like white on rice. I'm running out of ideas. He's the second biggest fish in the tank but he won't even defend himself.

You can kind of see him on the right. He looks like a large bumble bee cichlid. Yellow striping. About six or seven inches

That's a Melanochromis auratus you got there.
And as I thought, the other johanni was a stressed male. Johanni females are often yellow and don't have so much black in their dorsal fin.

If I where you I would get rid of everyone and start over. This time with just 1 species
