or some kinda fiber, are you talking about 100% polyester fiber that's sold in craft stores as pillow filling? that stuff seems like it would compact and channel quite easily in water. i have a big bag of that stuff so if that is indeed what you folks use in filters, then let me know. if not, i could use some clarification on what i should get to use as filter floss instead of the marked up stuff at the pet shop.

Thats the correct stuff and your right...I don't like it because it compacts and clogs as it fills but a LOT of people use it all the time. I prefur the sheet material...Standard blue white filter pad material sold in bulk.

alright i was using some of it inside of whisper biobags anyway so the strands don't get everywhere.
i was at a hobby shop and was looking at their foam, but it didn't say anything about open cell. is there a certain brand or another term it's called? i think i remember seeing blue/white stuff too.

I use the polyester quilt batting.

If you have to use the polyester batting make sure it doesnt have a fire retardant on it. It will usually say on the package.

When I was using the batting I would stretch it some to open it up. But you have to monitor it because it does clog easily.

I use mainly the standard blue white filter pad material, too. The only time I use poly fiber is when I want to remove smaller debri in the tank.

Been using the quilt batting for quite some time now...just bought another huge sheet today...very cheap...should last for a year at least...it does wonders polishing the tank water...
