Yea the lowes and home depot have lowered the quality of lumber they cut. Both companies control the companies that cut the wood to make studs so they cut the trees to young to help boost profits. Your best bet is independent lumber yards who purchase there wood from dealers.

Lowe's get their lumber from Georgia Pacific and Weyerhauser, they have no control over these companies whatsoever.
 
Wing, Go to Ganahl Lumber in Corona, Main St. and 91 frwy. Ask for No.1 grade douglas fir, Standard lumber is No.2 No. 1 is straiter and better structuraly it does cost a little more though anyway good luck
 
I also encountered this problem when building the hood for my tank. I wound up using S4S (sanded four sides) Redwood. It's more expensive but it is strait and clear not to mention rot resistant.
