Where are Hoplarchus psittacus collected from, and is there a difference?

I've read through a couple old threads on mfk about H. psittacus, and saw several references to Venezuela and Brazil.

I got one from on thursday from Infinite Aquatics and I asked Rich and he said they were from Columbia.



I was just curious if there is any variation between the different collection populations?

The Brazilian variety tends to have a lot more red than the other variants.

Do you or anyone else have pics of this difference? I believe Peanut_Power has a brazillian one, but it still looked very turquoise to me.

ive heard the same thing that brazilians show more red

im pretty sure mine are Brazilian, f2, and showing some nice red under their heads, especially my largest one, but also showing alot of green on its body

Nice pics and fish Sean! The ones Rich has have red under the head just like that, just not as much in the fins.

His are large though, I wonder if the fin color fades with age?

Those don't look Brazilian to me. The red on the Brazilian strain go from the throat back down the body.

Serg... what tank are you putting these with? How many did you pick up? These are really cool fish... I've owned some but they seem to be aggressive towards their same species.

I only picked up one bud. It's in my 120g with the bichirs, a black angel fish, and an NTT.

He doesn't exactly chase anyone, but sort of 'follows' them in an intimidating way.

Hasn't interacted with the bichirs at all, so far his attention is focused on the angel and the NTT.
