where can i buy pirahnas. im new

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ive raised p in a 55 before, had great luck, they do end up eating eachother though, so i built a 135, they still eat eachother, they are just that way, you can private message me if you want, some of the questions your asking are going to make some of the pompous, self richous members mad, in my opinion this is america, do whatever you want, best way to learn is trying stuff. keep the decor real simple in the 55, barebottom, couple rocks, no plants, p like powerheads, ive alway bought like 6 to 10, ended up with afew or couple, just have fun

E5 you are going about this the right way, ask lots of questions here before ya get them. Also there is much value in varying opinions, I would never recomend taking advive from one person In a private message just cause you would be afraid of getting someone mad.

I think buying 6 would be Ok, but you gotta have a plan. Talk to your LFS and see if they would be willing to take any extras you end up with. Also with tank set up. I am assuming you already have the 55 gallon, if not look into a 75gallon it is 6 inches deeper and has the same lenght and height. Well worth the extra money.

For filters go with 2 hang on back power filters Use either Emporer 400's or Aqua clear 110's I personally like the emp 400 but the Ac110 is very good. To buy either of these goto petsmart.com, print out the filters page with the price and take to your local petsmart and buy there. Thye will match the price, you'll save 30 bucks on each filter.

As your piranha get larger you will want to add a wet/dry sump filter and some powerheads for current, also But this is a couple months away so you can post on it later.

As for buying the Ps. Talk to your local fish store(not Petsmart) and see if they can order them for you. If not you'll have to go online, check out T33's posted link, I beleive there is a guy that sells of Ebay also. I'm sure if you google search you should be able to come up with some options.

"pompous, self richous" sounds like the perfect desription of someone who thinks he is the only on that should give advise in a pm.:irked:

Oh and if you only have a 20% sucess rate in raising piranha, then you probably should NOT be giving any advise to anyone. Piranha don't just eat each other, :screwy: unless mabye they are under fed or they arn't well taken care of so the week are killed off or they are so overcrowded that they have to fight for territory.

This looks like it may go off topic with individuals standing their ground and letting things get heated. Can i suggest we keep to the intention of the thread and helping out this newcomer to the piranha section of the hobby after this?

RuXPiN i really don’t think you used the best language there, but maybe i brought that on myself by being a bit stern in my recommendations. Private messaging should be a part of seeking advice, only second to asking everyone on the public forums.

I agree with Bderick67 filtration recommendations. However i don’t think a wet/dry (sump) system will be necessary with this small scale setup. An efficient retail filter that turns over a good volume of water per hour is all that is needed. Some will recommend at least X4 turnover, but i recon X6 is better seeing that you will be slightly overstocked.

I replied to your message E5Sergeant, we all look forward to your updates! Keep the questions and concerns coming, and we will all individually give you our opinion. Although I think it is safe to say that all of us (who replied) in this thread are experienced and acknowledgeable, you need to understand there will be variations in advice. Some of us will not agree with others. You will need to use your own judgement to decide what advice to follow.

hey man , i was in your shoes a month ago, i didnt kniow **** about piranhas, only advantage, i had was i have raised south american fish for years,, if uv raised or kept other south american tropical fish, uv got the basics down, i started off with 14, in a 100 gallon, now a month latter i have 9, the rule iv read over and over is 20 gallons per piranha! like joshy said, its just the mater of having to get rid of some fish, to quick, then if u dont get rid of them, u have a stresed tank, witch u dont want, your gonna have eneough trouble cycling your tank, unless uv done it before, man, one beginner to anotha , the best advise i can give u is ''READ'', read as much info on piranhas, as u can find, dont bother with books, between this site and piranhafurry, ull have all the knowledge, ull need, like i said when it comes to cycling the tank, temp, lighting, (i know some say p's like it darker, but i have my lights on a lot and doesnt change there behavior), and sustraight( sand, gravel and decerations, and food) there not that much differnt than any other south american preditory tropical fish, but dont get me twisted , there their own fish , and to be a good ''keeper'' ull have to do a lot of reading, to save you from learning the hard way... good luck homie!
