Anyone know where I can order a good quality vieja synspilum? I have found one or two dealers online... but I would prefer a male, and these sites don't sex them.

Rapps has some nice 4"-5" Syns in right now. At that size I would guess he'd be able to sex them for you before shipping. You're not going to find better quality than what he has in stock.

I got this one from Cichlid Connection. It's about 4-5" in the photo. I have several others that are smaller and just starting to show their colors. The photo doesn't do justice to the blue sheen mid-body, and the flash washes out some of the red on the head.

The three fish below are P. synspilum from Tangled Up in Cichlids. I'm not sure what to make of their markings - clearly different from the traditional 'Belize' synspilum shown above, but I trust Jeff Rapps' identification. These fish are all much more aggressive that the synspilum I bought from Cichlid Connection.

last 3 are not Synspilum. They look like Black belt hybrids

it's about what beautiful parents the fish came from Not What reputable seller the fish came from. Unless the seller always supply the same superb line and you want that line you go to that seller/breeder

I f you truly got those three "synspilum" from Rapps, I would contact him for those are definately black belts (which I know he had on the list a few months ago) or some kind of blackbelt hybrid.

Yes, I truly got them from Rapps as 'P. synspilum'. But that was last April, and I'm not particularly concerned about it now. I don't think they are blackbelts (I've had a number of those over the years and they are quite different in color - much less gold/green on the sides), but yes, I agree they seem to have some blackbelt in them. I've since acquired red-head P. synspilum I was after, so I'm good.
