Fug, first off, I hope you didnt take offense, for that was not my intent. The only reason I said to contact him was he has a reputation and if the fish he sent you wasnt what he said it was, I'm sure he'd like to know. They look cool no matter what they are though, if they indeed are blackbelts, those will be some of the most colorful ones I have ever seen.

I didn't take offense. When I first got these fish they looked like typical juvenile P. synspilum (greenish, with some red around the operculum and a short black band near the tail), so I had no reason to doubt. They were a bit more iridescent than other juvenile syns I've had, but I took that as a good sign because some synspilum on the market are pretty bland. As they got larger they didn't develop the red head, but because fish in this group are often late bloomers, I figured they might eventually transform. But now it seems clear they are something other than I expected. Attractive, but difficult to place. I didn't contact Jeff about it because I thought they may just be a variant I was unfamiliar with (perhaps it was my blind trust in the name given Jeff's well-earned reputation), or if not, I figured Jeff would have been aware of the issue by now.

I've got one of these fish (the middle one) in a tank on its own now and it has developed a deep red tail, red and blue variegated dorsal and anal fins, bluish/yellow sides, and a red tinge to its head. Quite different than when he's with others.

Cheers,
Ian

it's about what beautiful parents the fish came from Not What reputable seller the fish came from. Unless the seller always supply the same superb line and you want that line you go to that seller/breeder

The OP was asking where to order high quality Synspilums from. I simply responded with a reference to a vendor that sells/distributes just that. Most of these "beautiful parents" you're speaking of are usually purchased from reputable sources, hence the reason people continue to buy from them.
