Where can I get low quantity pond stocking?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you throw that many channel cats in a pond that size and that's all thats gonna be left in a couple years.

if ur serious about wanting to get it stocked up contact a local fishery and see if you can get them to give some suggestions based off the size of the pond etc.

I can't find any local fisheries! Lol thats the problem! They are all in Florida or another state and need like a $1000 dollar order to stock it.

there are plenty of hatcheries in NY and the surrounding area. If you really want to know what is in the pond currently, figure out the best sampling technique(traps, seine etc) and mark/recapture.

I have seen 1 acre ponds with a sustainable harvest of crappie and smallmouth. The harvest was less than 100 pounds annually but still sustainable. Im not sure what is going to happen if you just throw in species, but IMO you are wasting your time. You are asking for way to many fish of various species. Channel cats get big and IF they survive they wont need too many of them to take over. also, a 3" channel cat is only going to be lunch for a 5-16" game fish. The ecosystem is only going to be favorable for a few species in a pond that size. survive or not i think the pond will end up being a fraction of what you are planning. I am not trying to discourage....

I think it will be more successful if you plan out what you are doing better. first of all, if you want cats, go with a smaller species(bullhead?) if you are going to stock anything, it must be a reasonable size or you are only feeding the others. Look at it as an ecosystem and build it up over years. If you just add alot of fish of various species at once, only a few will survive and youll end up with only a few of what you wanted

Ive wanted to do this for years. good luck to you. Please send pictures, this will be a cool project

I think bullhead would be a much better option as well for cats, channel cats for sure do alot better in moving water (hence the name). Bullhead also wont grow nearly as large and take the other fish your favoring for a meal. To support all these fish your planning on putting in though you should start from the bottom up. I did this to a good friends farm pond a while back. We introduced a good variety of minnows into the creek leading in where the bass couldnt get em then worked our way up the food chain. Bluegills and pumpkinseeds are the prefeed food for many, but if you dont have enough food in the pond your bass baboes will be food for the pumpkinseeds. Personally id start small and work your way up, and DO NOT just throw any monster in there. While pike are good in larger lakes they can wreck havoc on smaller unprepared ecosystems. Sorry for the long post
