Really? My dad and I collected a bunch of invertebrates while we were in Florida this past Thanksgiving Break; all you need is a valid recreational saltwater fishing license and a knowledge of the general regulations (see page 5). of course then, that was on Sanibel Island, and I think that the regulations aren't as strict there as they are on the Florida Keys...

Interesting, I thought the collection of all wild live rock was illegal in the United States and it's waters.

I agree with Jworth. The Red Sea would be amazing. If you go you have to get me some fish though ;) a Purple Tang would do or maybe 2.

Collection of wild live rock is prohibited in Florida (probably the rest of the U.S., too) except for the small amount that is permitted when it is attached to certain soft corals, sponges, etc. that are being legally collected.

Be sure to read up on the specific regulations for any place that you collect any organisms and such.

Ahhh I see, thanks for the clarification.

I know he was interested in getting rock too, so it would be a no go in that regard.

My brothers boss used to collect his own fish, he is here at home though so he hasnt been on the MFK in awhile, maybe he will chime in on this if he gets on tomorrow or something.

I dont think you can collect LR anywhere in the states though. Only fish and inverts.

Yea the more I look into it the more the Red Sea seems to be the spot, just waiting on an email back from their wildlife dept. and yes if all is well some purple tangs will be high on my list of "if you can grab them".

Yea, LR collection is prohibited in all US waters and most of the gulf/carib if I am not mistaken (I have been looking for a place that will allow it with no sucess).

Yea i would very much like to add some (not a whole lot) LR that is uber fresh to my system in order to add to the bio diversity. I'm hopeing to do this little by little from diffrent places around the world.

yea..and even then fish/inverts have a number of restrictions. At least in FL they do.

Yes, collection in the FL is tight. And most places you can get to the water are protected "non fishing/collecting" areas due to being parks. Be really careful with the various regulations that collection fall under. Coral/gorgs are a BIG no - no in FL. Takes a special permit for that.

Outside the US is great - but you need import permits to bring stuff back, and need to deal with customs.

You best bet is to find someone already set up to do collection/importing and tag along.

...When I go to florida based on the regulation link....don't know if updated I would just collect lots and lots of hermits and ship them to new york...this upcoming summer.

.

out of curiousity do you have in suggestions for possible collecting locations in south florida (dade, monroe)? Don't mean any secret spots or anything, just general areas that can be accessed?

Mexico! I think you're aloud to get rock there ?

Not in any of the protected area's (most common dive sites). You are not allowed to so much as fart your wet suit  J/k

Well so far this trip has 4 Army Grunts myself included (1 INF 2 Rangers 1 SF), a Navy corpsman, 1 Recon Marine and a coast guard buddy in on this trip next winter so far....not supprisingly Thailand has been the no.1 vote so far with AU as a runner up :naughty:. So hopefully I will get to take a few gems home but if not this trip is turning into an fairly cheap animal house adventure :D
