are they air breaters like snakeheads
Yep

I'd like to get one at some point down the road as well

Look through some rivers, that will probabaly get you farther than looking in pet stores.

Duh!

But you can check out some native vendors, they sometimes get young bowfins.

i have been interested in bowfin as well with no such luck. contacted the native vendors on nanfa and they do not have. maybe if we can locate a hatchery, that would lead to something because they are raised for their cavier.

bowfin look so cool gosh they're like native snakeheads!

I'm not aware of any fish hatcheries that produce bowfin (for obvious reasons).
Native vendors will likely only have bowfin in the spring that are easily shipped (remember obligatory air breathers). When you see them available, you will need to act fast.

ksi aquatics has them in spring. i paid $10 each when i got mine and that was my 2nd attempt at keeping 3"ers. they all died AGAIN. i prazipro'd them to get rid of any tapeworms. and what i can tell from talking to people online i may have been over feeding them. or possibly keeping them too warm.they never puked anything up, just died with their mouths agape and mucus literally dripping off of them when i netted them out of the tank.i'm gonna try some more in spring.

I bought one at a LFS at 2". He grew fast and was kept in 80 degree water with dats and a wolfish. Handfed, now it belongs to ewurm.
