Criticism is defined as "the act or an instance of making an unfavourable or severe judgment, comment, etc.".
Other than questioning the (hard to read) text of the original post and origin / correct use of the word "Gorillus", how, specifically, did anyone criticize UMBEEKING or the fish that he caught?
- Did anyone call BS on Chris collecting the fish?
- Did anyone say that the fish is ugly?
- Did anyone come to the conclusion that the fish is NOT something new or interesting?
- Did anyone come to the conclusion that Chris shouldn't persue working with scientists, as he stated that he had planned?
- Did anyone personally attack Chris?
I think the extent of the alleged "criticism" - at least on my part - is wanting more information (clearer pictures, collection information, the "story" of the trip, etc.) to better understand what he collected and whether he perceived it to be a new species or a new varient of a described species (because it wasn't clear from the name he gave it).
Lots of people share this kind of information...in print no less... It's a NECESSARY part of demonstrating that you have something new.
Clearly anyone who would want such basic information - to learn more or to make a proper, informed judgement - would be ungreatful, jealous, or worse...a fish geek (GUILTY!), right?!?
For the third time, I don't fault the mods on this site for taking UNBEEKING's thread down (at his request).
I'm questioning the level of discourse here: personal attacks, rejection of science and general childishness in response to any post other than fawning praise...
Matt
I read the whole thread and was a large participant in it from the beginning.
For those wanting to know the reason for the Gorillus thread deletetion as per request of the thread starter UMBEEKING well its simple...
If I were UMBEEKING and did something great for this hobby , then faced B/S critics trying to put a negative spin on my accomplishment for this hobby , why would I leave the thread up. Why would I leave the videos up and detiails of these fish when there are people out there like these UNGRATEFUL and JEALOUS critics who do not deserve to enjoy what I did. If I started the thread , I would have asked to have it deleted just to deny those B/S critics my accomplishments.
To be honest , I thought it was disgusting how a couple people turned such an exciting positive topic into a negative discussion. That would be another reason I would want the thread deleted if I started it.
I can't speak for UMBEEKING nor am I assuming what he thinking in making that decision to delete the thread , but I'm just giving my thoughts as to what I WOULD HAVE DONE and WHY , if I were UMBEEKING.
This guy was kind enough to post videos about these newly discovered fish. Whether its a new species or a new umbee color varient (which it appears to be) , who cares. ITS SOMETHING NEW TO OUR HOBBY.
As a big fan of umbees and a passionate cichlid keeper I apprieciate all UMBEEKING Chris did , and the true passionate fish keeping hobbyist would have had nothing but praise for this guy instead of trying to punch holes in his accomplishment.
This was not a matter of Chris being unable to accept criticism....
The problem is HE NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN CRITICISED FOR ANYTHING TO BEGIN WITH !!!!!
BTW - Its nobodys business where Chris made his collections. I would never disclose that if I were him.
One final note....It is MOST UNWISE to make digs at moderators when their doing their job.
