Where did the term 'P14' originate.. ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im just gessing but i think p stand for Potamotrygon and the number stand for when they found them because motoro is technicly P1

well.. i think its p-12 is heneli and p-13 is leo. and p-14 is itaituba people just say p-14 for short

Ok well I need to find the root of this numbering system if I'm going to make a website.. :D Going to have to get myself that Aqualog..

lol miles.. Im looking that up right now.. you got me thinking

Are you familiar with the 'L' number plecs where the L originates from Loricariidae?

The number ID is used to represent catfish belonging (or suspected of beloning) to the family loricariidae which are yet to be scientifically described with the idea being that everyone is refering to the same species when they talk about a certain number.

P number rays are similar but where the P originates from potamotrygon. So as long as everyone agrees what a P14 is then they can be ID'd despite not being scientifically described yet. Of course after being in common use for a while a lot of the numbers remain so I don't actually know if P14 have been described or not.

Hi Miles,

in the Aqualog are the P-numbers from Richard Ross P1 - P62.
P14 from Richard is a eclipse leopoldi.

There was an additional P-numbering started from the german magazine Datz (they started the L-numbers) and in this magazine the Itaituba ray got the number P14. That was the start of the confusion. So I decided to give this ray the name Itaituba ray (asked Richard if this would be ok).

In the Aqualog the Itaituba ray is R150 or henlei "Small Spots".

Other names are "starry ray" or for specimen with many spots "Galaxy" and many and large spots "Galaxy Royal".

But most dealer use the P14 so far.

Ah.. ok thought so. I knew what the P system ment, like the C system.. Duh. I figured it came from a source though..

If I Build a website, I will have to align it with the P# system..

when will this site be done?? looking forward to it

I've already built the website.. I just need to add the content.. Alot of conflicts with Stingray ID, but I am hoping to get everyones input from DW to Frank to Mike to see if we can get a grip-hold on these Identification Issues..

If anyone wants to help or donate pictures, let me know.
