I also use it.. its a great way to level out the temperature of the tank. Also, It cant hurt to have additional oxygen and the fishes likes the current it produces.
 
You should aim your powerhead at whoever walks by when you are cleaning the tank, and then innocently say "oops".

I've done that!!!

As for me it depends on the tank. So I have some up, some down, and the Turbelle nano stream points right thru the heart of the tank.

i use to use a 400 gph powerhead in my 75 gallon for a school of caribe piranah, they loved it, theyd swim hard against the current, almost like a treadmill for fish hahaha
