Where do you guys plum you UVS?

There are two trains of thought to obtain optimal flow/contact time when considering your wattage and what you are hoping to do (sterilize vs clarify).

As many suggested, a loop off of the sump and returning to the sump is the most common way and probably the easiest to do.

You can also run a side stream. Have a line come off the main return to the tank, pass the UV and run back into the main line. You control flow to the UV via proper valving. I usually run them this way on bigger tanks. It's a little more expensive and you have to know your target flow rate, but it's great in situations where you can't pull and return a dedicated UV from the sump.

On this unit, the mechanical filter is the the right, after water passes through it, it gets split off to the twin 400 watt UV bulbs. Most of the flow goes right by it. There is a flow switch just to the left of the bulb housing that allows me to dial in the desired flow over the bulbs. This is a 3,000 gallon set ups. Bulbs are high wattage to compensate for the added flow rate needed to get water back to the tank.

If you use the flow from the return pump then you don't need to buy another pump and you don't use extra electricity.
