ive been looking and cant really find anything i like or anything im willing to spend on a peice of wood. Im not really looking for the branchy manzanita looking wood but i guess more malaysian? and "stumpish" something that i can make the tank look like its at the edge of the shoreline with maybe a tree stump in there or a fallen down tree...

i know ...big wood... can get pricey so do you guys with the big displays buy it or go out and find it. ive looked at a bunch of threads and i keep getting mixed vibes with people collecting their own driftwood. pond wood, river wood, ocean wood and so on. any inputs on this would be very helpful!

I bought my large stumps from my favorite LFS. But I have some driftwood that I found beside a small river. If you boil and rinse it, it is fine to use. Just make sure it is old driftwood and doesnt have any bark or anything left. Wood from beaver dams works well.

yea there arent too many reputable LFS down here besides petland and petsmart... and unfortunately alot more Salt Water than freshwater... ive been reading on some people using diftwood from the ocean but became a little uneasy when people starting talking about the salt and sand leaching into your tank and killing your fish.. any truth to that with driftwood found on the beach?

I always thought you could get it from the beach and boil it then rinse it off with hot water let it dry then throw it in but make sure it is anchored down if it isn't big enough.

I buy large pieces of driftwood from a local tourist shop. The shop has pieces that are a few inches to pieces that are 5' or more. The owner is very nice and his prices are extremely low.

I've gotten alot of mine from other hobbyist, when they change their setups or shut down tanks.
Check the classifieds, Craigslist, ect...

BELIEVE IT OR NOT BUT YOU CAN FIND NICE STEALS W/ LITTLE OR NO SHIPPING ON EBAY. I COME ACROSS NICE BARGAINS @ FISH CONVENTIONS/ AUCTIONS, CLASSIFIED/MARKETPLACE ON DIFFERENT FORUMS AS WELL. BIGGEST PIECE I HAVE IN 225 IS ABOUT 30-35 LBS AND IT WASNT OVER 50.00. YOU CAN ALSO WALK ALONG WATERWAYS FIND A NICE PIECE AND BOIL OR BAKE IT.

You could use wood from the beach but you would have to boil/ soak it for quite a while.
